A New Frontier...

Pastries in Solvang, CA

Ah, baking. My friends know that I enjoy savory dishes and that baking is something that I have not really tried. I grew up watching my mother bake cakes, bars and cookies and I am forever grateful to God for those wonderful memories with her. Lemon squares, Food for the Gods, Crinkles and birthday cakes... my mom and her sisters grew up spending their summer in culinary workshops. My Tita Joyce is an award-winning baker in the Philippines and she made our mini-bundt cakes for our wedding giveaway (won't have anything else!). And so I am already blessed with numerous tried and tested recipe books from my mom and it would be a shame not to use her recipes, both savory and sweet!

I visited the Professional Culinary Institute in Campbell a long time ago with my husband. It was supposedly for me but my husband ended up taking the Wine Program. It is an excellent school and we are very happy with their program. I did not enroll here... let me take baby steps, guys.

So it is inevitable that (1) I will be an owner of a spanking new KitchenAid. (My mom's white one is now with Tita Joyce). (2) I will have some form of education in the world of desserts and (3) I will add another new hobby!

In conjunction with what I do, let me thank the Da Vinci of Cake Decorating, the one and only Sylvia Weinstock who is famous for her realistic sugar flowers. Her works are a dream to behold! James Rosselle also makes awesome flowers on his cakes in Food Network Challenge. They are the two people who also inspired me to give this a shot.

Wish me luck guys, I'm going to have one fun crash course in cake decorating!
